The Rising Sun, a cedar strip kayak
This is the new cedar strip kayak that I am building. It is 16 feet long and about 24 inches wide. The cockpit is 32 inches. It has alot of room for storage. I started out by glueing the patterns of the stations to a piece of plywood then cutting them out with a jig saw. I then sanded all the edges of the stations smooth. The next step was attaching them to the strong back that was made from a 2 by 6. Made sure to line up all my lines and then ran a string to see how straight it was. Then striped the bottom and top. I put foam in the stern and bow. I placed the bulkheads in next. They are made of 1/4 inch panels with styrofoam sandwiched inbetween. Next I placed a polyuethane glue on the foam so it would adhere to the deck, I also placed the glue between the deck and hull where they were to meet. Next taped it together then applied the tape and epoxy to the shear line. I'm at the last steps now, sanding and putting the last coat of epoxy on. Hopefully in about a week I will be able to apply the varnish. I'll have more pictures when I am finished.
Well I got her all sanded down and varnished. I hung it from the ceiling to do the varnishing, that way I could run both the top and bottom at once. In the close up pics you can see the detail on the combing. I made all the fasteners from oak. All in all she came out beautiful and glides over the water like a dream.
I'll be starting my next one shortly so come back and visit soon.
