We put in at the end of 40A just east of the boat ramp where the Withlacoochee exits to the Gulf of Mexico. There is a nice little sandy beach here that is perfect for putting in kayaks. You can't miss it. There is a palm tree there that has a face carved into it.
We paddle out into the channel and head southward towards the barge canal where there are a few islands that are used for overnight camping. It's about 1 1/2 miles, which isn't that far. These pictures are from one of the islands. It has a nice sandy beach. The water surrounding it on low tide is about 1 foot.
In the channel you can see dolphins when they come in to feed. They are fascinating to watch as they work the water. They surround their prey and slap the water with their tails as they take turns entering the circle to feed.
