Obla De Obla Da, Cedar Strip Canoe

This is a canoe that my wife and I decided to build. We had done kayaks before and decided to try a canoe. It is 16 feet long 32 inches wide and 14 inches deep.

The stations were put in place and we are starting the stripping on the bottom

After the hull was finished it was turned over and stations removed. It was sanded down and then we did some wood burning on the sides. Then it was glassed and sanded. We built a cooler in the center that was made from styrofoam sandwiched between 1/4 inch plywood. Then cedar strips were applied to this and glassed.Shelves were created in the bow and stern with a hollow pocket so foam could be sprayed in. (We use the foam in the can. Be careful to allow for expansion of the foam. You will also notice that all wood surrounding was covered with plastic.)Then the foam was cut of flush.

Stryofoam was added to the top of the cooler. 1/4 inch plywood was placed on top and then strips of cedar were applied and glassed.

Both bow and stern were capped off and cedar strips applied. Which later would receive some wood carvings. The top railing was started. After that came the placement of the seats we were going to make.

Here are the finished pics of the carvings on the front, wood burnings, ice cooler, and seats.

The seats were made from oak and are high back. As you can see from the photos below. They were made of macramayed nylon rope. The pictures below are from the show they had at the Dunnellon Arts and Craft show. Our boats turned quite a few heads.
